Fraudulent businessman Neerav Modi's lawyers have put forward a sensational opinion in a London court that he is more likely to commit suicide if he is deported to India because he is mentally ill.
Until a few years ago, Neerav Modi was one of the leading diamond traders in the country. A native of Gujarat, he was accused of embezzling about Rs 14,000 crore from the Punjab National Bank.
The case is being investigated by the CBI and the Enforcement Department separately. He fled to Britain while the investigation was ongoing.
Following the confirmation of his presence in London, the Central Government stepped in to bring him to India. A London court last February allowed the deportation of Neerav Modi in a case pending before the Indian government. The Ministry of Home Affairs had also given permission for this.
In this context, Neerav Modi had filed a petition in the London High Court seeking leave to appeal against the London court order. The case came up for hearing yesterday. Advocate Edward Fitzgerald, appearing for Neerav Modi in the case, said, “Neerav Modi is suffering very badly mentally.
Psychiatrists say that Neerav Modi often has suicidal thoughts. His mother also committed suicide. Therefore, he is at higher risk of committing suicide if he is taken to Mumbai Jail. There is already a shortage of space in the jail on Mumbai's Arthur Road where Neerav Modi will be detained.
Also, there is a high incidence of corona virus infection. In view of all this, deportation should be banned, "he said.
