PMK founder Ramdhas has insisted that the legislature should abandon its plan to make the Omanthurar hospital a campus.
In this regard, the statement issued by Ramadhas today (June 12):
"It is very unfortunate that there are reports that the Tamil Nadu Government Multipurpose Hospital at the Omanthurar Government Estate in Chennai is being relocated and efforts are being made to relocate the premises to the General Secretariat and the Legislature Secretariat.
Like the people of Tamil Nadu, I want these reports not to be true.
The Medical College, which operates on the Omanthurar campus, offers 100 undergraduate medical students annually.
Now about 500 students are studying medicine at Omanthurar Medical College.
If the hospital is relocated from this campus, the medical college will close.
With the need for a large number of doctors in Tamil Nadu, the biggest setback would be the closure of the medical college.
Two announcements by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Medical Minister have shattered hopes that the DMK government will not relocate the multi-purpose government hospital at the Omanthurar campus.
The Chief Minister has announced that a multi-purpose hospital will be built at a cost of Rs. 250 crore in Chennai-Kindi. . The announcement by Subramaniam has raised doubts as to whether the Omanthurar complex will be converted back into the headquarters-legislature complex.
It would not be civilized politics if the Tamil Nadu Government Multipurpose Hospital was relocated and the campus was converted into a headquarters; Nor will it be politics that benefits the people.
There is no doubt that the Omanthurar Government Estate was specially designed and built with the intention that the General Secretariat and the Secretariat of the Legislature should function with adequate space.
When the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced in 2011 that the General Secretariat building on the Omanthurar campus would be converted into a government hospital, it was not Karunanidhi or MK Stalin who first objected ... it was this Ramadhas. What the then government did was a huge mistake.
But it would be a big mistake to remove it and re-establish the General Secretariat there, as it has become the best hospital in terms of billions of people in tax revenue. Competition for such an issue should not be political.
The Multipurpose Hospital at the Omanthurar Government Estate is now functioning well with 14 departments.
Quality treatment is being provided free of cost by some of India's leading government and private hospitals in the fields of cancer, radiology, rheumatology, urology, cardiology and plastic surgery.
For the first time in South Indian government hospitals, a robotic surgery unit has been set up at Omanthurar Multipurpose Hospital. Rs 35 crore has been set aside to buy the equipment from the US and the equipment is expected to arrive at any time.
In addition, permission has been sought to start 7 departments. If they too are launched, Omanthurar Hospital will rise as one of the premier hospitals in the country.
The government should not engage in any attempt to sabotage the establishment of such a specialized hospital in Tamil Nadu.
As announced by the Tamil Nadu government, it is not possible to set up a multi-purpose hospital at the Kindi King Institute premises at a cost of Rs 250 crore.
The government is reportedly trying to build a new hospital by taking over the medical infrastructure at Omanthurar Hospital.
Doing so would be of no use except to waste millions of people's tax money.
The rulers of Tamil Nadu should realize this.
People have also been severely affected economically by the corona attack. Tens of thousands of poor, middle-class people who are losing their livelihoods need life-saving surgeries.
In an environment where they cannot go to private hospitals and seek medical treatment, it is imperative that this hospital continue to function.
According to the Tamil Nadu Medical Minister, none of the buildings on the Omanthurar campus appear to be vacant.
There is a multipurpose hospital in one part of the building and a medical college in another.
When new units are launched at the multipurpose hospital, additional space will be required. As Omanthurar Government Multipurpose Hospital has become a reputed government medical institution, the government should try to upgrade it on par with Delhi Aims.
Therefore, the existing hospital on the Omanthurar campus should be scrapped and abandoned if there is a plan to turn it into the Legislature and General Secretariat premises.
Omanthurar Hospital will continue to be as it is now; The government should openly declare that the headquarters will not be there.
If Tamil Nadu needs a new headquarters and legislature complex, the government should explore alternative ways to set them up. "
Thus said Ramadhas.
