History of Madras Province renamed as 'Tamil Nadu'... Anna who passed the resolution in the Assembly...!

During the British rule, the southern part of India was called Madras Province. India became a republic in 1950 after the liberation of India. Subsequently, in 1956, the states were divided linguistically. The states of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh were divided accordingly. But the area where Tamil-speaking people lived continued to be the state of Madras.

It touched the hearts of those who had a good heart for the Tamil language and the Tamil-speaking people. Ever since then, there have been calls for a name change.

Especially in Virudhunagar, Tiyagi Sankaralinganar fasted till his death in 1956 demanding a change of name to 'Tamil Nadu'. He was then met by various political party leaders. In it, he met former Chief Minister Annathurai and Tiyagi Sankaralingana. Sankaralinganar died for that demand.

Since then, voices have been raised several times about the name change to 'Tamil Nadu'. When Anna finally took over as Chief Minister in 1967, he brought a resolution in the Assembly on July 18, 1967 to amend the Constitution to change the name to 'Tamil Nadu'.

All members of the legislature unanimously supported the vote on the resolution brought by Chief Minister Anna, saying, "If it is passed, it will be a victory for Tamils, a victory for Tamils, a victory for Tamil Nadu."

After the then Speaker CPA Adithyanar announced that the resolution had been passed, Chief Minister Anna declared three times 'Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu' and all the members said 'Long live'.

Then in January 1969 the name of Tamil Nadu was formally changed and came into force. Today is the day the resolution was passed.
