The Western Ghats, declared by the United Nations to be one of the most legendary places in the world, is the water source of Tamil Nadu. But there have been severe occupations over the past century. The project, which is harmful to the environment, has been strongly opposed by local people, environmental activists and political parties. In a lawsuit filed on behalf of the Friends of the Planet against the non-environmental certification issued for the project, the final judgment issued in November 2018 stated that the environmental certification provided by the United States Government for the project would go through but that the National Wildlife Board (NWWL) project could not be implemented without obtaining a non-environmental certification. If the project is implemented, the safety of the Western Ghats and the surrounding dams is in question. Although the then State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) stated that the project could only be considered under Category A, according to the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, the project was renamed to Category B, which is just a construction project, declaring the project to be of national importance and directly certified by the United States.
