The Governor addressed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly yesterday ... The Supreme Court has ordered today ....!

In Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court has ordered to hold local body elections in Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Nellai and Tenkasi districts and in the newly divided districts of Vellore, Ranipettai and Tirupati. The judges have ordered the Tamil Nadu Election Commission not to postpone the local government elections due to the spread of corona and to hold the local government elections by September 15 and announce the results.

Addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Governor said, "The Supreme Court has ordered today that elections will be held in 9 districts and all rural and urban local bodies as soon as the corona is reduced."

Local elections should have been held in Tamil Nadu in 2016. The DMK has filed a lawsuit seeking that 'ward redefinition has not been fully done, no reservation has been given to the tribals and local elections should be banned till they are done'.

Subsequently, the court ordered that the petitioner's request be complied with. Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has completed the ward redefinition and reservation process and submitted its report to the Supreme Court. The court accepted it and ordered the election to be completed by December 2019.

Accordingly, the State Election Commission has issued a notification regarding the rural local elections. Meanwhile, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Vellore and Tirunelveli districts were divided and 5 new districts were formed namely Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Ranipettai, Tirupati and Tenkasi.

The DMK has again sued, demanding that wards in newly divided districts should not be allowed to hold elections without redefining. The Supreme Court, which heard the case, ruled that elections could be held in 27 districts other than the newly divided districts.

Accordingly, elections for village panchayats, panchayat unions and district panchayats in 27 districts were held in two phases on December 27 and 30 last. With the exception of a few incidents, the election ended peacefully. Voting began on January 2 last year and ended on January 3.

In this situation, the Supreme Court has ordered to hold elections by September 15 in 9 districts where local elections have not been held. Due to the formation of new districts, local elections have not been held in 9 districts. They have ordered to hold elections in Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Nellai and Tenkasi. The Supreme Court has ordered local government elections in the newly divided districts of Vellore, Ranipettai and Tirupati. The Supreme Court has refused to give Tamil Nadu another six months to hold local government elections.
