Speaker Biman Banerjee has complained to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that the governor is interfering in the functioning of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Tankar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are at loggerheads. The two recently clashed over post-election violence. In this context, the Conference of Speakers of the State Legislative Assemblies, chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, was held on Tuesday. At that time, the West Bengal Assembly President complained to Om Birla about the Governor.
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata yesterday, Speaker Biman Banerjee said, “Governor Jagdeep Tankar is interfering too much in the functioning of the legislature and parliamentary democracy. The governor has not yet signed many of the bills passed in the legislature. This has never happened before in the history of democracy in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. I have complained to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about the activities of the Governor, ”he said.
