Maldives' Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid has been elected the 76th President of the United Nations General Assembly.
The chair of the UN General Assembly is elected on a rotating basis each year. This opportunity will be offered on a rotational basis on a regional basis. The land was given to the Asia-Pacific Group for 2021-22.
Following this, Maldives' Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid announced last year that he would run in the election. He was supported by various countries including India as no one came forward to contest against him at that time.
At the same time the Maldives has never held this position. Thus various countries supported Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid in good faith. India also officially announced its support for Abdullah Shahid last November.
Suddenly, six months ago, Afghan Foreign Minister Salamai Rasool announced that he was running for the same post. Although many countries supported Afghanistan, it suddenly came to an end, with many promising to support the Maldives in advance.
In addition, Afghanistan was already in office in 1966-67. The Maldives never held this position. The Maldives had already spoken to many and received support. In this situation, the Maldives won the referendum held today.
Maldives' Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid has been elected the 76th President of the UN General Assembly. He received 143 votes in favor. 48 votes went against. No country boycotted the referendum. He will replace the head of the UN General Assembly, Volkon Boskir from Turkey.
