Excavations in the Kodumanal area next to Chennimalai have uncovered a 'well' with a staircase used by the public 2,300 years ago.
In Kodumanal village near Chennimalai in Erode district, a team led by J. Ranjith, Project Director, Archaeological Survey of Tamil Nadu, started the 8th excavation work from May 2020. As excavations were halted by the Corona outbreak, excavations resumed at Kodumanal 10 days ago with appropriate safety measures.
Commenting on the excavations, Archaeological Project Director J. Ranjith said:
During excavations in the Kodumanal area, we have found 3 types of tombs known as the Great Stone Emblem. One of the tombs contains a human skull. Researchers at the Kamaraj University in Madurai have been informed to test the DNA.
Furthermore, in the present study a well with stairs has been identified. Stairs have been set up to take water from this well from 2 directions.
The well was dug 10 meters long and 2.36 meters deep. The well is surrounded by a perimeter wall.
The current excavations at Kodumanal have uncovered 662 broken various types of bracelets, a complete variety of 343 stones, 193 items made of iron such as iron, glass, nails, chisel, knife, 103 small tiles in various colors, 28 various items made of copper and a total of 1,535 items including 15 coins. We have found.
All of these antiquities were used when humans lived about 2,300 years ago.
Thus he said.
