In order to preserve the traditional banana species of Kumari, 20 rare varieties of banana saplings were planted in the Ecological Park premises at Kanyakumari Government Horticulture Garden.
Kanyakumari Government Horticulture Farm, established under the Department of Horticulture and Hill Crops, Government of Tamil Nadu, was established in 1922 by Maharaja Srimoolam in an area of 30.64 acres.
Presently the Government Horticulture Farm at Kanyakumari is spread over an area of 15.64 acres and the surrounding Ecological Park covers an area of 15 acres. Government Horticulture Farm produces quality Mango, Chiku, Nelly, Pomegranate, Guava and Ornamental Plants and sells them at quality prices.
The Bio-Control Laboratory here also manufactures and sells bio-fertilizers and bio-fungicides.
Also, a model chocolate production hall has been built in the Eco Park premises at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh and chocolates are being prepared and sold. Steps have been taken to trade the chocolates made here by taking them in the open market.
The Tamil Nadu Horticulture Development Agency outlet in front of the park sells ornamental plants, domestic horticultural products, seeds and fruits produced at the Government Horticulture Farm.
Kanyakumari Government Orchard Ecological Park Complex hosted the traditional planting of 20 rare banana plants at Kumari. Information Technology Minister Manothankraj attended and told reporters that 20 varieties of banana were planted;
Rare fruits with medicinal properties are grown in the mangroves in Kanyakumari district. In ancient times more than 25 banana trees were planted here and it was the daily food of the people. Many banana species are not currently in use.
Therefore, with the aim of reintroducing a large number of endangered banana species for public use, rare banana trees have been planted in the Kanyakumari Ecological Park. The traditional banana varieties of Kumari are not cultivated here, such as Chemmati, Karummati, Kumbila Singan, Poongthali, Matti, Karpurvilli, Ayramkaichi, Malaivalai, Nepuvan, Singan, Bughakottai, Patthi, Raskathali, Montanvazai, Nattu Payan, Tohla, Sakkyanthan, , White. Plants of 20 varieties of traditional banana have been collected and planted in the government garden farm at different places in the district.
He said that steps would be taken to get the permission of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to make this eco-park more modern and attract more tourists. Officers and employees including Deputy Director Horticulture Sheela, Agasteeswaram Panchayat Sangh Samiti member Premlata were present in the program.
