Starting fake accounts on Facebook ... Fraudulent gang to extort money .... Cyber crime police warned ...!

Cybercrime police have advised the public to be wary of fraudulent gangs who start fake accounts under different names on Facebook and extort money from friends of the person involved.

While money laundering through websites has been on the rise in recent times, there has also been an increase in the number of people nowadays engaging in money laundering through social networking sites like Facebook.

People who take a photo and information from someone's Facebook page and fake another Facebook account with the same name, make a friend request (Friend Request) to that person and make friends. Then, they cheat by collecting money by sending SMS via Facebook as if the person concerned is sending them in a crisis situation.

Commenting on this, Johnson from Mannargudi said: Recently, I received a text message from a Facebook account in the name of a friend of mine saying that he needed Rs. Suspicious because I was not familiar with that friend enough to ask me for a loan, I asked for the fake person's bank account and when I put the IFSC number in it, it was revealed that it was a BDM bank account in Delhi. In this regard, I immediately informed the concerned friend and made him inquire.

In this regard, the technical expert who advises the cyber crime unit of the Thiruvarur district police, Prakash said: Be careful if you receive a new friend request from someone who is already a friend on Facebook. If the account has been recently opened, you can immediately contact a friend concerned to inquire and avoid such scams.

It is from the northern states that such fraudsters target those in Tamil Nadu. They do not give the real address in their bank accounts. Fraudsters escape because fraudsters who pay as little as Rs 1,000 or Rs 2,000 are not interested in complaining. Fake individuals who defraud large sums of money immediately freeze that bank account as well. He said the police had set up a cyber crime unit to find out and take action.

Thiruvarur Cyber Crime Sub-Inspector Ganapathy said: The public should be careful when using Facebook. If the Facebook account is found to be misused, you can report the URL to the website of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or to the Cyber Crime Office at the district level. He said the fraudsters would be identified immediately and action would be taken.
