Customs officials seized Rs 70 crore worth of heroin at the Chennai airport.
Customs officials closely monitored Qatar Airways passengers arriving in Chennai via Doha from Johannesburg, South Africa, following reports of drug trafficking. Authorities are investigating 2 African women who were on the plane at the time. But both have been tense and have responded contrary to precedent.
A subsequent search of their bags turned up eight plastic bags. It was sprinkled with spices. On examination they were confirmed to be white heroin powder. Weighing in at 9.87 kg, the heroin has an international market value of Rs 70 crore. They were subsequently confiscated.
Both were immediately arrested under the Drug Prevention Act. Authorities are conducting further investigations.
