A fire at a chemical factory in Pune has killed at least 18 people.
A fire broke out at a private chemical factory in Pune's Uravade area this evening. The fire broke out at a factory called SVS Aqua Technology. It is feared the death toll could rise as a result of the devastating fire.
Rescue operations are in full swing as many are trapped in the factory. It is feared that up to 20 people may be trapped inside. It is a company that has been involved in water purification with chlorine dioxide.
Police and firefighters are currently engaged in firefighting here. So far 18 bodies have been recovered in the rescue operation. Rescue operations have been delayed because many people are trapped in critical areas inside and because of the chemical factory.
It is alleged that the accident may have been caused by a mistake in the way chlorine dioxide was used in the factory. Nearby residents have been evicted as complaints from the factory have been mounting.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uttam Thackeray and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the devastating fire.
