Pushkar Singh Tami has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Following the resignation of Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat on Friday, the new Chief Minister has been elected at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly held at the BJP headquarters in Dehradun.

Trivandrum Singh Rawat, the then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, was ousted by party workers last March and the BJP appointed Tirath Singh Rawat, an MP from Pauri Kawal, as its new chief minister.

If a ministerial post is given to a person who is not a member of the Legislative Assembly, he or she must become a member of the Legislative Assembly within 6 months. In that sense, Tirath Singh Rawat, who took over as chief minister on March 10, must be elected a member of the legislature by September 10 if he is to continue in office.

The term of the current legislature ends in March 2022. With less than a year to go, the Total Commission is less likely to intervene in vacancies where Teerath Singh Rawat is likely to contest.
