According to the National Legal Services Commission, more than 11.42 lakh 'cases' have been settled across the country by the Second National Lok Adalat (People's Court) this year.
A statement from the commission said:
The second National Lok Adalat of the year was held across the country on Saturday. Of these, 35.53 lakh cases were taken up for hearing by 4 pm and out of 5,129 cases, more than 11.42 lakh cases were found.
Judge UU Lalith Lok Adalat, Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the National Legal Services Commission, oversaw the proceedings via video. She also consulted with the chief executives of Lok Adalat cases in various district courts. He then advised that consultations be held before approaching the Lok Adalat for a settlement between the parties involved in auto accident compensation, marriage, check fraud, labor issues and other property cases. He issued the instruction so that one or more opportunities might be available for the parties concerned to negotiate.
A Lok Adalat was held in Kerala on July 9 and 39,361 cases were taken up for hearing. Of those, 26,118 cases were found on the island.
The Lok Adalat has been adjourned to July 14, 18, 24 and August 1 in Karnataka, Dadra & Naga Haveli, West Bengal and Maharashtra respectively.
The statement said that the next Lok Adalat of this year would be held on September 11.
