Last 2006-2011 DMK. During his tenure, the then Chief Minister Karunanidhi completed the construction of the new General Secretariat at the Omanthurai Government Estate in Chennai at a cost of Rs 650 crore. The building was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also present on the occasion.
Twice assembly sessions were also held in this new headquarters building. After the change of government in 2011, when Jayalalithaa took over as the Chief Minister, she converted the new General Secretariat building into a multi-purpose specialty hospital. The assembly was again moved to Fort George Jain. The assembly session has been held at the fort for the last 10 years. The assembly session was held at the Chennai Kalaivanar Arena during the Corona wave last year.
Until now, the assembly meeting has been held at the Kalaivanar Arena. In this context, the Government of Tamil Nadu announced a few days ago that a multi-purpose high specialty hospital would be set up at the Kindi King Institute campus in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 250 crore. There is a lot of talk in political circles that the hospital is likely to be relocated to Kindi and that the Multipurpose Hospital in Annasala will be re-converted into the General Secretariat and the Assembly Hall.
When asked about this, the health department officials said, “The Government Multipurpose High Special Hospital operating at Anna Road does not have a complete structure for the hospital. This is the structure for an office. Fewer patients are treated here than in other government hospitals. But the cost of maintenance is high. Omanthurai Multipurpose High Special Hospital is more likely to be shifted here if the Multipurpose High Specialty Hospital is to be set up in Kandy. But they said it was up to the government to decide.
The outcome of the change will depend on what Chief Minister MK Stalin decides on the matter.
