Kolkata court orders National Human Rights Commission to probe violence in West Bengal...!

The Kolkata High Court has directed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to set up a panel to probe post-election violence in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress has won a landslide victory in the eight-phase assembly elections in West Bengal from March 27 to April 29. Mamata Banerjee took over as Chief Minister. Violence erupted in West Bengal after the election results were released on the 2nd of last month.

In particular, those who rallied support for the BJP in the elections, the downtrodden, were severely attacked by women. Many of them died. Many have fled the city for fear of their lives.

The BJP has blamed Trinamool Congress volunteers for the attack. Meanwhile, state Governor Jagadeep Tankar condemned the need to put an end to the violence.

In this context, a letter signed by 600 people including vice chancellors, professors, directors and deans from various universities across the country was sent to the National Human Rights Commission, the Commission for the Underprivileged and the Women's Commission to investigate the West Bengal violence.

Meanwhile, various public interest litigation (PILs) have been filed in the Kolkata High Court seeking an inquiry into post-election violence.

All these petitions are being heard by a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal. The day before yesterday, when the petitions came up for hearing, the judges ordered the National Human Rights Commission to set up a committee to investigate the post-election violence.

The judges also directed that a member-secretary of the West Bengal State Legal Services Commission be included as a member of the panel and that a member of the State Human Rights Commission be included in the panel. - PTI
