With the completion of the 2GB free data plan for college students implemented during the previous AIADMK regime, around 9 lakh students across the state are facing serious difficulties in attending online classes and examinations.
2GB free data in previous setup
In Tamil Nadu, the scheme to provide 2 GB free data per day to college students was implemented during the previous regime. Last February 1st the then Chief Minister launched a program to provide 2GB free data to the students at the Palanisamy General Secretariat.
The scheme has benefited 9,69,047 students studying in government and government aided arts and science colleges, polytechnic colleges, engineering colleges and self-funded colleges. Cheap data cards were issued through Elcote to get 2GB data per day for four months from January 2021 to April 2021.
Online Classes by Common Freeze
The first full curfew was imposed last May after the second wave of corona infections increased. Students could not go to school or college. This academic year inspired students to study and conduct online classes. Thus the students are studying the lessons as if they are at home.
9 lakh people benefit from free data
Online classes often rely on web data. 2GB free data was provided to 9,69,047 students across the state following the issue that most of the students were from rural and poor areas and did not have internet access to attend online classes. Students are using it for online class and exam.
Now that the free 2GB data plan is over, students are grappling with the situation of not being able to attend online classes and exams on the phone. Following this, the college students have demanded that the free 2GB data plan announced during the previous regime be re-implemented in the interest of Chief Stalin's students.
Millions of students need benefits
Speaking on behalf of the students of Periyar University College, he said, “The 2GB free data plan for students studying in colleges run under the university expired on 18th. Send the question paper from the college at the time of examination. Download it and convert answer sheets to PDF file and send to colleges. Also, you have to study online for sample exams, semesters and aryan exams. We also write online exams. Since these require data, the government will again provide free data to benefit lakhs of poor and common students. "
Government will implement the scheme again
Kulantaivel, Vice Chancellor of Periyar University said, “There are 1.75 lakh students studying in 113 colleges affiliated to Salem Periyar University. The first semester and Aryan examinations will be held in colleges from June 15. The exam is ending on July 15 and the results will be declared in the last week of this month. Online classes will be conducted in colleges from the first week of August.
All colleges, universities and students should bring to the notice of the higher education department to complete the 2GB free data plan for college students. The new government is more likely to re-implement this scheme in the interest of the student union. Hopefully the free data scheme will be launched soon as the policy of the government will be in the best interest of the students,” he said.
