Case registered against 35,554 members of PMK and Vanniyar Sangam in the struggle for 20 percent internal quota ...!

The Chennai High Court on behalf of the Tamil Nadu DGP said that 204 cases have been registered against 35,554 members of the PMK and Vanniyar Sangam who were involved in the struggle for a 20 per cent internal quota for the Vanni in the reservation for the most backward class.

The Vanniyar Sangams engaged in human chain, demonstration and picketing on December 1 last year, demanding a 20 per cent quota for the Vanniya Kula Chattris in the reservation for the most backward classes.

At the time, Waraki, the chairman of the People's Assembly of India, had filed a case in the High Court seeking action against members of the PMK and Vanniyar Sangam for allegedly attacking a train and causing damage to public, motorists and public property during the train blockade and road blockade in Perungalathur.

In the reply petition filed by AIG on behalf of the Tamil Nadu DGP in this case, all the District SPs and Municipal Commissioners of Police acted on the order issued by the Chief Secretary that gatherings, demonstrations and protests should not be allowed in violation of the rules due to corona restrictions.

A total of 204 cases have been registered across Tamil Nadu against 35,554 members of the PMK and Vanniyar Sangam involved in the protests. District and city wise details are also given in the reply petition.

If the DGP is to take drastic measures to prevent law and order and protests without permission, Waraki should dismiss the ongoing case.

The PMK and Vanniyar Sangam have called off their protests after the Tamil Nadu government introduced a bill in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to provide 10.5 per cent reservation for the Vanniyars.

The case is set to return to court in the next session.
