South African President Cilic Ramaphosa has sent senior ministers to the city of Durban to investigate and report on racial tensions against Indians.
Jacob Zuma, who served as South Africa's president from 2009 to 2018, has been ordered by the Constitutional Court to appear in person for trial on various corruption charges. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison on May 29 for contempt of court for failing to appear in person.
Former South African President Jacob Zuma has surrendered to police on July 7. Ava is currently being held at the Estcot Prison in KwaZulu-Natal. Protests are taking place across South Africa against the imprisonment of Jacob Zuma.
As part of the protests, protests are taking place in the town of Dapan in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Looting and violence against Indians took place in and around the Phoenix suburb, which is heavily populated by Indians, using this fighting environment.
Violence erupted between people of Indian descent and blacks. They blame each other for this and post on social media. Tensions have risen between the two communities in Durban.
In this regard, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaisankar, while talking to South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandey, expressed his concern on behalf of India over the widespread violence and riots against Indians in South Africa.
Earlier in the day, Adibal Cyril Ramaphosa summoned the Minister of Police and the Chief Minister of KwaZulu-Natal, Begum Chile, to Dopan on Friday to discuss the situation in the Ethequini area in Dopan. However, Ava did not go to the outlying areas of tense Phoenix and Pietermaritzbok. Ramaphosa has instructed the ministry to visit those areas and inspect the situation.
Meanwhile, shops were looted during violent protests by supporters of the former president in various provinces. More than 110 people have been killed in these incidents.
