The West Bengal High Court has ordered the West Bengal government to reinstate the excluded protection of a Suvendu Adhikari who is the leader of the West Bengal Opposition and a BJP MLA.
A Suvendu Adhikari in the Trinamool Congress withdrew from the party before the election and joined the BJP. The Suvendu Adhikari, who contested in Nandigram constituency, defeated her opponent Mamata Banerjee. Subsequently, the Autonomous Suvendu Adhikari was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in the State.
The Bengal government on May 18 withdrew the security provided to the Suvendu Adhikari as the Cold War between the Swede chief and Mamata Banerjee continued. The Suvendu Adhikari was told that he did not need the protection of the state government as he was with the federal Z-plus security.
However, a petition was filed in the Kolkata High Court on behalf of the Suvendu Adhikari seeking the return of the excluded protection. It said, 'Even though he was given Z-plus security, he needed state police protection to monitor his journey in 3 ways. The state police should be ordered to provide security as they are needed to assist the pilot, surveillance and route.
The petition was heard in the presence of Kolkata High Court Judge Swakant Prasanth and the order was issued yesterday.
It said, 'Even though the state opposition leader is already under the protection of the Suvendu Adhikari of the central government, it is the responsibility of the state government to provide him security without any threat on the basis of being the leader of the opposition. Therefore, he should be given back the excluded protection.
Although the Z-plus security Suvendu Adhikari does not need the protection of the state government, the state government should provide security so that he is not subjected to any charges.
